Instructions how to give intramuscular injection on dog

To inject a dog intramuscularly is a very difficult task if the owner has no experience at all. And what if I inject? And what if I hit the vessel or nerve, I will damage the bone with a needle? And it is psychologically difficult to stick a needle into the paw of your pet. But if you understand how to make an intramuscular injection of a dog correctly, complications can not be feared. The main thing is to remember that we do not torture a poor dog, but extend his life and strengthen the health of a four-legged member of the family.

Place of injection

Look at the hind leg of the dog on the side, assessing the thickness of the bones, the volume of the muscles and the thickness of the skin.

Red lines in the figure denote bones, which you need to grope – pelvic, femoral and tibia (small and large). The blue dot is the place where you need to inject the dog intramuscularly, ie. muscle of the thigh. In dogs of different constitutions, the thigh muscle can be stretched and thin or short and massive, so we carefully feel the foot with our fingers, determining the shape and volume of the desired muscle. Do not forget about the difference in the angulation angles of bones in different breeds of dogs.

The safest area where to put a prick to the dog intramuscularly is to the right of the femur, if we look at the left paw (and vice versa). The place for insertion of the needle is the most massive part of the thigh muscle, which is easiest to feel (it feels like the muscle rolls under the fingers). Lower or higher the muscle becomes thinner, becoming more taut and firm – in these places, the injection of the intramuscularly to the dog is undesirable (pain is stronger, the probability of damaging the bone, joint or nerve fibers is higher).

Preparation

Prepare a syringe with medicine in advance, so as not to frighten the dog with incomprehensible (and even worse, if understandable) actions. Why is it important not to frighten a pet? The trick is that it is much easier to inject a dog intramuscularly, if the pet is relaxed and calm. At the moment of fright the muscles are strained, the needle is harder to introduce, the dog is more painful, which means it is very scary. As a result, the pet will be afraid even of the type of syringe, which in the future will greatly complicate the process of treatment. In addition, the drug diverges worse in the strained muscle and the narrowed blood vessels, which means that the injection of the dog into the thigh is more likely to cause lameness, inflammation and other complications. By the way, to minimize pain, it is desirable to alternate the paws.

Before making an injection intramuscularly, the dog needs to be adjusted to a peaceable harmony. Sit next to you, pet your pet, scratch behind your ear. It’s great if the dog recently took a walk and ate: the state “That would have to sleep” is the best moment for an injection. But do not forget that many drugs must be administered strictly before a walk, before meals or after a dream – we take into account the recommendations of the veterinarian.

If you doubt whether the dog will tolerate or escape safely, where to stab a dog intramuscularly, whether the hand will not tremble, etc., it is wiser to ask for help from someone from the household. The helper should sit next to the pet’s head and stroke it on the sides and chest so that at the moment of jerk (if it will be) manage to hold the sissy. Do not try to force the dog to lay down, grab it roughly and press it to the floor – so you’ll only frighten the poor fellow, and about the fright and the prick of the dog in the muscle we said earlier.

Nervous, shy, dominant and aggressive dogs can seriously bite even the owner when they suddenly feel a strong pain. If you are unsure that the pet will persistently postpone the procedure (maybe the dog has appeared recently or this is found), before putting the dog intramuscularly, put a muzzle on it. No muzzle? Use a bandage or, for example, a belt.

Technique of injection

If you inject the injection intramuscularly to the dog as veterinarians do, you need to draw an imaginary line from the elbow to the place that you chose to insert the needle. But the elbow should be on the opposite side of the selected paw (ie if we are kolm in the left thigh, the line is drawn from the right elbow). The angle of needle insertion is obtained, which is approximately equal to 45 degrees.

Complicated? Then even before making an intramuscular injection of the dog, evaluate the thickness of the muscle. Is it enough to bring the needle to the desired depth? The needle should enter the muscle by about a centimeter, passing the skin and the subcutaneous fat layer. If the dog is small, the musculature is dry and the skin is very thin, you can just pierce the muscle through, which is unacceptable. In this case, it is better to use a short needle from an insulin syringe, putting it on a syringe of the correct volume. Conversely, if the pet is large and the dose is small, it is convenient to use an insulin syringe with a needle from a 2 or 5 ml syringe. By correctly selecting the length of the needle, we can inject the dog intramuscularly, as most owners do; under the almost straight angle to the thigh.

Remains at the same time the most difficult and simplest: with one sharp confident movement, insert the needle into the muscle and gently push the piston. For convenience, you can put the palm of the free hand under the thigh so that the muscle does not move at the time of pressure. If the dosage is large or the preparation is painful upon administration, the piston should be pressed evenly and slowly. After inserting the needle, you can not move the syringe to the right or left – this will cause the pet severe pain. Remove the needle at the same angle as when inserting, not shifting to the right and left, a sharp reverse motion. Done! Now you know how to make a dog injection intramuscularly, and will be able to help the pet if necessary. We praise the good girl with the best piece, stroke the injection site and are proud of ourselves and the most patient dog in the world.
